I've never been able to figure why, because she had lived all her life in Lanarkshire. However, what I did know was that the father of her (illegitimate) son was James Brown. I have therefore been VERY interested to find Browns in the properties adjacent to The Snade! I note that a James Fergusson Brown (son of Wiliam and Agnes) was born at Shillingland in 1856, and a George James Brown (son of William and Sarah) was born at Dardarroch (?) in 1863.
